Tasting Notes

We recently tasted the wine with a French sommelier in a renowned Sydney restaurant & wine bar and he was surprised by how much it reminded him of classic Tannats from Madiran. Now that was a compliment! Deep, but still bright crimson-purple on the rim; it is thickly packed with dark/black fruits, but with surprisingly soft tannins. This wine will age magnificently but it is ready to deliver now.

Expert Reviews

93 points – Nick Butler, The Real Review, Dec 2019

Deep, dark red colour. An imposing and complex bouquet of raisins and aniseed, black cherries and darkest berries. Mouth-coating when sipped, hitting every corner and laneway of the palate. Tannins are chewy and the finish driven by measured acidity. Built for a medium-rare T-Bone. Very good.

92 points – James Halliday, The Wine Companion, Aug 2019

Crushed and de-stemmed, wild-fermented, matured for 2 years in used French oak. Deep, but still bright crimson-purple on the rim; it is thickly packed with dark/black fruits, but with surprisingly soft tannins, not unlike durif. Will continue to develop calmly.

Weinpeter- an amateur WCP-Wine and Cheese Pairer

our small group of amateur WCP´s found excellent pairings of Toppers Tannat with rich cheeses like Chaumes, Triple-Brie and Roquefort. The protein binding qualities of the abundant tannins in Toppers Tannat counteract the fattiness in the cheese and hence makes the cheese more palatable and the wine softer. A win win pairing.
