Vigneron, Owner

“It was always my dream to produce wines that speak of their unique terroir, are an example of the best varietal expression and invite people to start a journey of discovery.”

Truly passionate about this unique piece of land at 900m altitude, Mark finished his viticultural studies in 2001 and planted the vineyard between 1999 and 2002. He initially experimented with a few varieties but found alternative varieties such as Gewurztraminer, Petit Manseng, Tempranillo, Tinta Cao, Nebbiolo, Barbera have thrived in the red, ochre terroir of the vineyard.

The Winemaker

“My philosophy is to express the terroir of the vineyard. I feel that great wines come from great vineyards not great winemakers.”

Mike Hayes joined the Topper’s team in 2008 and since then has brought numerous Trophies and Gold Medals to the winery. A true Queenslander he has worked in 16 regions, 4 states and 2 countries as a winemaker and viticulturist. Mike was the first Queenslander to win a Gold Medal at the Sydney Royal Wine Show for his SWH Shiraz 2003. He also won the Churchill Fellowship in 2012 as well as the 2014 Samuel Bassett Award for a significant contribution by an Individual to the Queensland Wine Industry. Together with Mark Kirkby he is dedicated to showcase the purity and high quality fruit of our alternate varieties produced by our high altitude Topper’s Mountain vineyard.
