This wine is built for early drinking, don't overthink it. Chill it slightly, open it with confidence, pour it generously, and eat well alongside it. That's the Seeker Red.

A thriving Spanish red, built for right now. For the table tonight, the barbecue this weekend, the Tuesday evening that deserves something better than ordinary. The Topper’s Mountain Seeker Red 2023 is exactly that kind of wine: a Tempranillo grown at 900 metres above sea level on volcanic soils in northern NSW, .

It’s vibrant, generous, and ready to drink.

The Seeker Range: Wine for the Curious, Not the Patient

At Topper’s, we divide our wines into three ranges; Seeker, Finder, and Keeper. Each with its own character and intent. The Seeker wines are the winery’s invitation to the curious: ready-to-drink adventures and zingy innovation. Tinkered with curiosity for those who want to explore without overthinking, seek without ceremony, and find pleasure in every glass without needing a special occasion.

That philosophy fits Tempranillo beautifully. In Spain, the variety makes everything from young, fresh, and intentionally un-oaked Joven-style wines. To age-worthy Reserva and Gran Reserva bottles that spend years in barrel and bottle before release.

Our Seeker Red sits comfortably in the first camp: a wine made for early drinking, for the table, for sharing.

High AltitudeTempranillo

Tempranillo’s name comes from the Spanish word temprano  meaning “early”, which refers to the grape’s tendency to ripen several weeks ahead of other Spanish reds. That early ripening, combined with a natural love of altitude and continental climates, is exactly what drew us to plant it as one of the larger blocks at Topper’s Mountain when we established the vineyard.

In Tempranillo’s two Spanish heartlands, Rioja and Ribera del Duero, it reaches its greatest expression in the higher-altitude vineyards where cool nights and marked day-to-night temperature swings slow the ripening process and preserve the acidity that the variety can easily lose in heat. Oz Clarke, one of the world’s most respected wine writers, has noted that to get elegance and acidity out of Tempranillo you need a cool climate. At Topper’s Mountain’s 900-metre elevation, that coolness is a given.

The deep, iron-rich red ferrosols provide the free-draining, mineral-dense growing environment that Tempranillo prefers: well-drained roots, concentrated fruit, and a sense of place that transfers directly into the wine. Tempranillo’s naturally lower acidity is naturally managed here by the site’s altitude and cool nights, which retain freshness without intervention.

Tasting the Seeker Red Tempranillo 2023

Bright. Clear. Ruby Red.

Pour the 2023 Seeker Red and you immediately understand why this variety works so well in cool climates. The colour is a bright, clear ruby. Not the deep, brooding purple of a warm-region Tempranillo, but something more transparent and lively, the colour already telling you something about the freshness inside.

The nose is immediately welcoming. Fresh cherry leads the way. Not jammy or cooked, but the kind of cherry you find at a farmers’ market in summer. Classic Mediterranean dried herb aromas of dried thyme, rosemary that cool-climate Tempranillo so often produces and that give the wine its savoury, interesting backbone.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with soft, silky tannins. The fruit is generous and honest  cherry and red plum carry through from the nose, joined by a light vanilla note and a flicker of dark spice that suggests some careful handling during winemaking without heavy oak treatment. The finish is clean and refreshingly dry. This is a wine that ends where it should, leaving you waiting for the next sip rather than overwhelmed.

Serve it with the slightest chill; fifteen minutes in the fridge will do. This brings out the freshness and make the acidity sing. In Spain, this is how good Tempranillo is often enjoyed: cool enough to feel alive, not so cold that the aromatics disappear.

Seeker Red at the Table

Tempranillo is one of the most food-friendly red varieties in the world. Its medium body, savoury edge, and relatively smooth tannins make it a natural companion for a wide range of dishes whether humble or elaborate.

The Seeker Red 2023 performs best alongside:

  • Tapas and charcuterie: the classic Spanish pairing: jamón ibérico, chorizo, manchego, roasted peppers, and crusty bread. This wine was made for exactly this kind of relaxed, generous eating
  • Wood-fired or roasted chicken: particularly with herbs and a smear of paprika on the skin, which echoes the wine’s Spanish character
  • Lentil and vegetable dishes: Tempranillo’s savoury edge makes it surprisingly effective with hearty plant-based dishes, particularly lentil stew or roasted eggplant with tomato
  • Paella or Spanish-style rice dishes: the regional pairing that feels inevitable but always works
  • Mild soft cheeses: fontina, young manchego, or a good brie all integrate seamlessly with the wine’s soft tannins
  • Pizza with tomato, olives, and cured meat:  the acidity handles tomato without complaint, and the wine’s body is a natural match for good sourdough pizza

This wine is built for early drinking, don’t overthink it. Chill it slightly, open it with confidence, pour it generously, and eat well alongside it. That’s the Seeker philosophy.

A Spanish Classic in an Australian Context

Tempranillo has now been grown in Australia for roughly thirty years, and in that time the country’s best producers have identified the conditions it truly needs: altitude, free-draining soils, and cool nights that preserve the acidity and freshness that warm regions tend to bake away. Topper’s Mountain’s site is high, volcanic, and dramatically diurnal.

What the Seeker Red adds to that story is accessibility. This is not a wine that demands years in a cellar or a grand occasion to justify opening. It is a wine that asks only that you drink it, enjoy it, and share it freely — which, in the end, is the best thing any wine can aspire to. Our family have spent more than two decades proving that our corner of northern NSW can produce wines of distinction. The Seeker Red Tempranillo is our warmest, most generous handshake with that proof: a wine that says, simply, come and try something made with curiosity and care.
